Superfast Broadband in Putford?

The contract to supply superfast broadband to the Putford area (and to West Devon) has recently be awarded to Airband Community Internet. They recently won the contract to supply Dartmoor and Exmoor and already provide broadband to local villages such as Buckland Brewer. The system does not rely on wires or cables, but instead a receiver is fitted to the property so that a wireless signal can be picked up. Speeds up to 30mbs can apparently be achieved. According to Connecting Devon and Somerset, Airband is currently working to determine exactly which properties will be included in the rollout.

Bradworthy and District Ploughing match and Blue Force Working weekend

Is your garden overflowing with veg? Have you made beautiful jam or chutney? Did the lovely June weather allow you to make top quality hay or silage? Can you children create? Do you make exceedingly nice cakes?

Then please enter the produce sections of the Bradworthy Ploughing match on the 9th of September at Cleave farm, Newton St Petrock. This year we are holding a two day event with the traditional Ploughing match on the Saturday running along side the Blue Force working weekend - both the 9th and 10th September. Blue Force are this year celebrating 100 years of Ford tractor production and we would like to invite anyone who has any model of Fordson, Ford, New Holland or Fiat tractor or machinery to bring it along for either static display or working. Everyone is invited to view the ploughing, produce classes and displays on the Saturday and then the Cornish tractor pullers will be doing their thing on the Sunday. There will be plenty of other things for people to see on both days with trade stands, craft tent, catering and bar available.

Entry forms for the ploughing match and produce classes are available from various local shops, D & I Bridgmans, W Sanders garage or please contact Jess James on 01409 241976

For more information or to enter the working weekend please contact James Poole on 01409 261282 or 07815 118279.

Summer is here and so is cheaper heating Oil

This is the time of year when the organised amongst us start to think about winter oil stocks; Summer's is often the best time to buy. Low demand drives prices down.

The Devon Oil Collective was set up by Devon Communities Together and has been saving people money on the purchase of their oil for the last 5 years. This is a way of ensuring that the hard task of finding the cheapest oil to purchase is done by us. Leaving you able to just sign up, sit back and enjoy the benefits of cheaper heating oil.

In 2016 we went into partnership with Affinity, a subsidiary of Anglian Famers Ltd the largest agricultural purchasing co-operative in the UK. Affinity pool together fuel orders and negotiate directly with suppliers, obtaining very competitive prices for syndicate members and a good delivery service.

How it works: You can now sign up to become a member of the co-operative on the Devon Communities Together website in our membership section. Once you become a member you can place your order directly with Affinity normally on the 1st working day of the month and they will add your requirements to the bulk purchase they are negotiating.

There is a minimum order of 500 litres and that unit price will be the same for all orders. Affinity then aims to have the oil delivered to your property within 10 working days of the order being placed.

If you know of people in your community that could benefit from purchasing their oil through a local co-operative, then why not become a Local Co-ordinator and help your community group with their orders. Co-ordinators have free membership of the collective and we support them with promotional material for the scheme.

This scheme is for everybody, but we particularly want to help those on low incomes or who find it difficult to manage their own negotiations.

LOST - Indian Blue Peacock. Last seen at Mambury on 15th June and possibly at Land End Cross shortly after. He was calling out at the time he disappeared and he had his full tail feathers. He may have stopped calling and lost his feathers by now as is normal for this time of year. If you have seen him call Lesley on 01409 241653
